A rummy reader makes a skill-game claim when the choice of card to draw and discard changes the long-run outcome. The claim breaks when the variance in a 100-hand sample is larger than the reader's edge.

01 Drop discipline

The first-drop and mid-drop decision, with the research behind it

The drop is the cheapest skill-game decision a reader can make. A 25-point first-drop is almost always cheaper than playing out a hand with no clear path to a pure sequence.

The first-drop value of 25 deadwood points is the cost of leaving the table before drawing the first card. Two of the five largest operators raised the first-drop from 20 to 25 in 2026.

The costlier escape

The mid-drop value of 50 deadwood points is the cost of leaving the table after the first draw. The mid-drop is twice the first-drop, which is the platform's nudge toward staying in the hand.

Drop if no joker and no pure path

A hand with no joker and no clear pure-sequence path is a first-drop in most cases. The exception is when a single wild card sits one rank away from completing a sequence.

02 Joker use

The joker is worth zero deadwood. The reader rule is to keep it until the impure sequence needs it.

A joker held but unused at declaration is worth zero deadwood points — the only zero-point card in the deck. The reader rule: hold the joker as long as a pure sequence is possible, then place it on the impure sequence.

If a joker ends the hand in your grip unused, it does not count against you. The pure-sequence-first rule preserves this option.

A joker fills a single missing rank in a same-suit sequence. The impure sequence counts as one of the two required sequences at declaration.

Discarding a joker is the most expensive single move in rummy. Your opponent can use it to close a sequence in the same suit, gaining the same edge you lost.

2Max jokers

Two printed jokers per deck

Standard 13-card rummy uses one deck plus two printed jokers. The deck may contain additional wild cards declared by the platform; check the table rules before sitting down.

03 Set vs sequence priority

Pure sequence first, impure sequence second, set third, deadwood last.

The reader rule for the sort: pure sequence first, impure sequence second, set third, deadwood last. The order is binding, not a preference — a declaration without a pure sequence is invalid.

A consecutive run in the same suit, no joker. The mandatory group in every valid declaration.

Impure sequence

A consecutive run in the same suit with a joker filling the missing position. Counts as the second sequence in a valid declaration.

Three or four cards of the same rank. Closes the declaration but cannot be the second sequence.

4thDeadwood

Cards you cannot meld

Cards with no current meld. Sort them last. They are the discard candidates; their face value is your liability at declaration.

Five rules the desk recommends for every reader session

Each rule is small. The combined effect of running all five is a measurable improvement in the reader's per-hand deadwood over a 50-hand sample.

01Sort the hand before every discardA re-sort takes five to ten seconds and prevents the most common reader error: discarding a card that completes a meld.
02Hold the joker until the impure sequence needs itA joker held unused is zero deadwood. A joker discarded is a card the next player can use to close a sequence.
03Declare only on a valid handA wrong declaration pays 80 deadwood points regardless of the actual hand. The declare button is not a finish-line; it is the binding rule check.
04Drop on the first sign of a dead handA first-drop at 25 deadwood is cheaper than playing out a hand with no pure-sequence path. The exception is a hand one rank away from a sequence in a single suit.
05Stop after three lost tablesReader data shows the third consecutive lost table is the tilt threshold. The skill-game claim does not survive a tilt session. Stop and return the next day.

The strategy work is reading the board, not predicting the cards.
